Welcome to the 2012 Monitor news page. Check in here for regular updates on current world events considered, (by this site’s authors), to be either potentially or actually apocalyptic in nature. Useing Terence McKenna’s Timewave model as a guide we expect to see a gradual ramping up in both the rate and magnitude of phenomena of all kinds between now and December 21st, 2012. By that date, one way or another, we should see a world changed beyond recognition. Which first? The good news or the bad news?

The 2012 Monitor Threat and Novelty meters, or TNM, while unscientific are designed to indicate the intensity and significance, whether for good or ill, of any event in progress. The Threat meter is straight forward and estimates actual or potential danger on a global scale based on numbers of fatalities, numbers of people affected, damage to habitat, economic impact, irretrievable loss of environment, imminent wars, planetary ‘natural’ disasters, cosmic events, etc. The Novelty meter is the Good (relatively) News gauge. It’s more intuitive than Threat and indicates a scale of perceived strangeness from 1 to 10, How unusual is this event? Has anything like it ever happened before? Examples of the highly unusual would be occurences of military intelligence or corporate honesty, in either unlikely event the Novelty gage would be up in the 7’s, a full 10 would be an actual miracle...the second coming or the arrival of ET.

DARK FORCES CONSPIRE TO END NET NEUTRALITY

The meteoric growth of the Internet and global access to freedom of speech and public opinion was not anticipated by the World’s Power Elite.  They are now trying to close the stable door after the horse has bolted.  Any NWO corporate attempt to restrict the flow of information and education between ordinary people world wide can be seen as a threat to real democracy and the possibility of a mass awakening by 2012.  A CRITICAL Threat

It is hardly surprising that the negative energies of the Elite would take any opportunity to suppress freedom of information and sustain the Matrix.  LOW novelty.situation.

Global corporate interests formed of the major telecommunications companies are conspiring to restrict Internet access.  Some restriction is already covertly in place through tiered delivery speeds, the less you pay the slower it goes and the highest Broadband speeds promised by telecoms and ISPs in their marketing are rarely actually delivered.  Look for the disclaimer, ‘Actual speeds may vary’.  Chris Riley, policy counsel at Washington based advocacy group Free Press said, "Allowing the industry to set its own rules is like allowing BP to regulate its drilling."

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has warned that the future of the Internet is "under siege" by a conspiracy of powerful interests.  According to the BBC, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps wants every household in the USA to have high speed broadband Internet access by 2020 based upon net neutrality principles. The term 'net neutrality means that all Internet resources, connections and data are treated equally.  The FCC recently decided to reclassify Internet services from information services to telecommunications services, which gives it greater authority to impose regulations.

He warned that if the FCC fails to reassert its authority, then the days of the open Internet will be succeeded by the age of "the gatekeepers".  Copps said it will be a big fight to take on the powerful telecom companies, Internet service providers (ISPs) and big media companies. "They have redeployed their troops at the FCC, throughout Washington and in the blogosphere," Copps said.  He is worried that the well funded lobbying groups might drown out the voices of ordinary citizen. And well he might, because if that happens the Internet will end up just like cable TV.

As the Commission's longest serving member, Mr Copps said he wanted to publicise the issue because he was worried that telecoms and other well funded lobbying groups would drown out the voices of the ordinary citizen.  He said it needed to be more than an issue debated only in Washington among politicians and advisors.

"People need to realise that meeting the broadband challenge is something really important in their lives and for their futures," he told the BBC. "And they need to understand that a competitive nation cannot tolerate digital divides between haves and have nots."

Hurricane Warning

As it is only a warning of incipient disaster this news is gauged as only a MODERATE Threat at this time.

There are hurricane seasons every year. However, this forecast from NOAA expects stronger and more frequent storms than in 2005, the year of Katrina. MODERATE Novelty.

"The 2010 hurricane season is not looking good," says Greg Holland, director of the Earth System Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. This year is a lot like 2005, the worst hurricane system on record, he says. "Overall conditions are very similar, with one important difference: they are actually a bit worse." Earlier this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its official forecast, predicting a very active season that could produce 14 to 23 named storms, and three to seven hurricanes that hit Category 3 or higher.

The Gulf Oil Spill

Due to the extreme damage to both environment and economy this event and possible global effects, this event is gauged as extremely HIGH Threat.

While BP’s response is predictably inadequate the US government’s reaction seems unusually competent at this time. MODERATE Novelty.

The disaster unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico continues unabated as BP struggles to contain the gusher they created. The question that should be uppermost is why they were allowed to drill that deep in the first place without proven fixit technologies for the ‘what if’ scenario. When it comes to blame, no matter how much BP has to spend after the fact, that there was only a single blow-out preventor without a backup, and a backup for the backup, at a depth human engineers cannot go. This is yet another example of profit driven corporate greed.

North Korea Threatens "All out War."

Although this may be just more saber rattling from the Dear Leader 46 S Korean sailors are dead. The USA is demanding action from the UN. China remains on the sideline. MEDIUM to HIGH Threat.

Since North Korea and South Korea never actually declared peace this latest exchange is just one more atrocity in an ongoing conflict. LOW to MEDIUM Novelty.

South Korea claims that North Korea is responsible for the sinking of their warship, the Cheonan, killing 46 sailors. North Korea had previously denied any involvement in the incident despite the evidence that North Korea torpedoed the vessel. Since North Korea and South Korea never actually declared peace this may be viewed as the latest exchange in an ongoing conflict. Kim Jong-Il has now threatened that if the South attacks the North in retribution it will be, “All out war.”

A UN panel has also accused North Korea of continuing to export nuclear and missile technology in defiance of a UN ban. It is said that North Korea used front companies to sell weapons to Iran, Syria and Burma. The panel has called for urgent investigations. This situation is ongoing.

aRTIFICIAL lIFE

This development is so recent that gauging potential threat is difficult. If it proves to be as harmful as GM crops the Threat level will rise. Currently LOW Threat.

This is an unprecedented event. An astonishing discovery. Is man about play God? Might it actually prove to be of genuine benefit to humanity? Seems unlikely but possible. VERY HIGH Novelty.

Scientists in the US have succeeded in developing the first living cell to be controlled entirely by synthetic DNA. The researchers constructed a bacterium's "genetic software" and transplanted it into a host cell. The resulting microbe then looked and behaved like the species "dictated" by the synthetic DNA. The advance, published in Science, has been hailed as a scientific landmark, but critics say there are dangers posed by synthetic organisms. Some also suggest that the potential benefits of the technology have been over-stated. But the researchers hope eventually to design bacterial cells that will produce medicines and fuels and even absorb greenhouse gases. Dr Craig Venter defends the synthetic living cell, he and his colleagues had previously made a synthetic bacterial genome, and transplanted the genome of one bacterium into another. Now, the scientists have put both methods together, to create what they call a "synthetic cell", although only its genome is truly synthetic.

Icelandic Volcano

The Icelandic volcano that recently disrupted air traffic around the world and closed down most of Europe is, for the moment, in pause mode and currently LOW Threat.

The impact of the ash cloud on the global economy and the business of getting travelers to their destinations without air travel was interesting but not catastrophic. MODERATE to LOW Novelty.

This situation is ongoing, watch this space for updates. Track all volcanic and earthquake activity worldwide at the RSOE website.
